The car market continues to fall

The Association of Kazakhstan Automobile Business (AKAB) announced the results of sales on the official market of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the first month of 2016.

The official sales market at the end of the first month of 2016 reached a new low over the past 4,5 years since May 2011. Sales of new cars in Kazakhstan in January dropped by 45,68% compared to the previous month and reached 3492 units. In annual comparison, the decline in sales was 55,25% compared to January 2015, when the car market also showed a significant decline. Thus, the January result turned out to be lower than the pessimistic forecast of ACAB.

The situation in the country's commodity and financial markets served as restraining factors in the consumer activity of Kazakhstanis, which affected January sales. The traditional seasonal factor also put pressure on the automobile market.

The top three in January differs from the usual picture. Thus, the traditional leader of the sales ranking - cars of the Russian brand - took 3rd place in the ranking with a sales volume of 457 cars (versus 1180 cars in December). The first place in terms of the number of cars sold is taken by Toyota with a result of 761 cars, showing a sales increase of 27,47% compared to the previous month (versus 597 sales units in December 2015). The Renault brand was in second place, showing an annual sales increase of 66,37% (559 cars sold in January, against 336 units in January 2015), while in a monthly comparison, a decline in the number of sales by 34% (against 847 units) sales in December 2015).

This ranking is due to several factors. The loss of the leadership position by the LADA brand is due to a drop in sales. While Toyota, which fixed prices in national currency, on the contrary, was able to improve its market performance. The price of Renault brand cars, which are in second place in the ranking, is not pegged to the dollar, thereby ensuring an appropriate level of sales. Domestic manufacturers sold 486 cars during the reporting month, which is 42,65% lower than December sales (versus 833 units). According to the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, as of February 4, 2016, 5 applications for preferential car loans were approved for a total amount of 152 million tenge. Of these, second-tier banks issued 16 loans for a total amount of 874,9 million tenge. Thus, of the allocated 4 billion tenge, 439% of the funds were approved and agreed upon, and 14% of the funds were actually disbursed.

The average price of sold passenger cars, including passenger cars and SUVs (according to ACAB calculations) in January amounted to 6 tenge. The increase in the average price of cars sold in the reporting month was due to an increase in sales of premium cars. In particular, Toyota and Lexus cars.
