Kazakhstan car market in January 2017 – low sales of new cars, the number of registrations is growing

In January 2017, 2466 new cars (up to 3 years old) were sold in Kazakhstan.

The total amount of all cars sold was ₸ 18,7 billion or $56,5 million.

Cars from the Toyota brand continue to lead the top three best-selling cars in 2017 – 403 sales, followed by the Lada brands – 395 units, and Renault – 259 cars.

Hyundai sold 177 passenger cars in January.

It is worth noting that this brand is becoming increasingly popular among Kazakhstanis, since Hyundai passenger cars assembled in Kostanay fall under the preferential lending program in the price range of ₸4-6 million. Let us recall that last year Hyundai commercial vehicles produced in Almaty , went out for export.

Hyundai is actively strengthening its position in Kazakhstan - in 2016, the Hyundai trademark was included in the Customs Register. This will allow us to begin work on clearing the market of low-quality spare parts in the country.

The active work of the brand contributes to the fact that ACAB analysts are considering the possibility of changing the three usual leaders.

Overall, sales in the commercial vehicle market were weak in January. This is due to seasonal activity, which contributes to sales in the spring, and after the New Year holidays, as a rule, there are few sales.

Lowest January sales:

Opel, LiAZ, Suzuki, Gas, Ural – 0 sales

Mini, Jaguar, Iveco – 1 car each

Mazda, Scania, Audi, Porsche, Foton – 2 units.

Despite the fact that formally Jaguar (1 car) and Porsche (2 cars) are outsiders in terms of the number of cars sold, this is a normal level of sales for dealers, since the average bill is high.

Registrations in January 2017

In January 2017, 69 transactions were registered, which is 192% more than the number of registered transactions in the same period last year.

The number of registrations for used cars in the retail segment amounted to 57 units, which shows an increase in activity of 933% compared to last year.

The activity of transactions for legal entities in the used car market also increased by more than a third (+34,56% compared to last year) – to 2 registrations.
The bulk of transactions are made by individuals with used cars (>3 years = 84%) and conditionally new cars (<3 years = 10%). Transactions of legal entities in the aggregate do not exceed 7% of their total number. At the same time, however, legal entities in general are experiencing a higher increase in the number of transactions than individuals in general, especially for conditionally new cars (46% versus 3%). Transactions with used cars, both for individuals and legal entities, amount to 88% (last year they were 86%).

In terms of regions, the South Kazakhstan and Almaty regions are traditionally the most active (10 and 086 registrations, respectively), the North Kazakhstan region is the least active (9 registrations).

Approximately half of the transactions occur in the South Kazakhstan and Almaty regions, the cities of Almaty and Astana. Regarding conditionally new cars, about a third of transactions were registered in Almaty and Astana. Relatively higher growth dynamics (over 40%) are demonstrated by Atyrau, North Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, Kostanay regions and Almaty for all cars and South Kazakhstan and Zhambyl regions for conditionally new cars.

We remind you that registration implies:

Primary official sales;

Primary sales by gray dealers (cars imported by them in previous months)

Sales on the used car market (that is, resale by individuals of used cars already driving in the Republic of Kazakhstan);

Import of cars from the countries of the Customs Union and from third countries, both by individuals and gray dealers;

Making changes to the technical passport - installing gas equipment, other changes in the technical characteristics of the car;

Replacement of SRTS and GRNZ in connection with the movement of the car to another area, due to loss;

Temporary import from other countries;

Entry into inheritance, acceptance under a gift or lease agreement.

Vehicle registrations include the following types of vehicles: passenger cars (including light commercial vehicles weighing up to 3,5 tons), minibuses, buses (with more than 16 seats, not including the driver's seat), trucks (weighing over 3,5 tons ), trailers and semi-trailers.

It is worth noting that the overall dynamics of January 2017 corresponds to the forecasts of ACAB analysts. This year we expect a certain recovery in the market.

According to the President of the Association of Kazakhstan Auto Business Andrey Lavrentyev:

“The opportunities that the government provides for Kazakhstanis are becoming more and more interesting and effective. We expect that lending conditions will change for the better this year. These factors help stimulate the production of cars in Kazakhstan and increase the level of local content, which in turn will help contain prices.”
